Whaleboat Crews Row Through Strong Winds for Independence Day Races
(New Bedford-) Battling 20 mile-an-hour winds, fifteen whaleboat crews carried on the 150-year tradition of whaleboat races in New Bedford harbor to celebrate Independence Day. The most exciting finish was in the Men’s Division, where The Buzzards beat O’me De Laurie by a second. The fastest boat of the day was Buttonwood Park Zoo’s coed team, Adrift, who beat the nearest competition by twenty seconds. Whaling City Rowing, the race organizers, welcomed a crew from Mystic Seaport, which finished second overall in the coed division and who said they would be back next year. Bufftree Building Company was the presenting sponsor of the Independence Day Whaleboat Races. The proceeds from the races support Whaling City Rowing’s youth rowing programs.
