Independence Day Whaleboat Race

State Pier, New Bedford, Massachusetts


You are invited to join a 150-year old New Bedford tradition. Come and race the Skylark, the Flying Fish and the Herman Melville; replicas of James Beetle designed whaleboats. All events begin at 9:00 AM!

IDWR Race Course

Race Categories are: Open, Woman’s, Men’s, Masters (age 50+), Co-ed and Youth (age 13-21).

Proceeds from the IDWR support WCR Youth Rowing Programs.

Employers: Sponsor a crew and promote your company at this grand New Bedford event.

Individuals: Form a crew with your friends or co-workers. Your employer may be interested in sponsoring you, or you may race as an independent crew. Don’t have a crew but want to join the fun? Let us know and we’ll match you with other rowers.

Practices: for all crews begin June 1st. Crews receive training and 3 hours each week of practice time in our whaleboats which is included in the entry fee.

Races: Your crew will race on Saturday, July 3rd, in the time-trials in the morning, and Finals in the early afternoon. Your division is determined by your time in the trials.

Entry Fee: $25 per person.
