Hello all:
Just wanted to give everyone a brief overview of the Fifth Annual Youth Whaleboat Challenge that was held last Saturday, May 5th.
The weather was beautiful. We had 8 area high school teams compete in three disciplines: circumnavigation of Crow's Island, the Figure 8 Race and the Zipper Sprint and Harpoon Toss. The kids had a great time. We served them breakfast and lunch. One of Bishop Stang's teams, The White Caps, won the overall competition and took home the "New Bedford Cup".
We had great on the water support from New Bedford Harbor Development, the Harbor Police and The Sheriff's Office. Our on the water crew of Louie Doherty and Ralph Eustis did a wonderful job with the harpoon toss. Many thanks to the Buzzards crew for setting our buoys early Saturday morning. A big thank-you to Kathryn Grover for manning the food tent for the rowers. Lucy Iannotti and Dave Prentiss kept everyone moving in and out of the boats for which we are grateful. Thanks Kevin, for all the pictures. Thanks to our timers who were busy all day. A giant thanks to Liz for handling all the scheduling of the teams and also to all the trainers who got the teams ready to compete throughout the month of April, rain or shine.
All the participants received a commemorative tee shirt for competing in the Challenge. We do have a few tee shirts left (12 medium, 5 large and 3 extra large). Since they are dated for this event, we would like to offer them to our members at a discounted price of $6.00 each. So, if you would like the opportunity to wear a great looking tee and support our event, please let me know and I'll get the shirt to you.
Thanks again to all who helped out to make it a great event.
